Imam Sajjad’s Sermon on Fridays of Ramadan

Fridays are considered Eids in Islamic tradition and a day for worshipping and paying attention to family values.

The Fridays of the holy month of Ramadan, meanwhile, are even more important because Ramadan is superior to all other months and it is a time in which the faithful fast from dawn to sunset.

The days and nights of the Fridays of Ramadan are better than those in Fridays of other months.

It has been narrated from the Holy prophet (PBUH) that God, the Almighty, frees one thousand people from the fire of hell at the time of iftar in the holy month of Ramadan, and when the day and night of Fridays of Ramadan come, He frees thousands from the fire of hell in any hour.

According to Hadiths, things like reading the Holy Quran, doing the Ghusl of Jummah, reciting the Faraj Supplication, etc, which are Mustahab (recommended) on Fridays in other months, have double Thawab (reward) on Fridays of Ramadan.

Imam Sajjad (AS) would deliver a sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina on Fridays of Ramadan in which he gave pieces of advice to people.

Parts of the Khutba (sermon) of Imam Sajjad (AS) is as follows:

Oh son of Adam! Woe to you who are negligent about the remembrance of God and the death angel whereas they are not negligent about you. Your death is indeed closer to you than anything else and is moving toward you and is about to reach you. So imagine that opportunities have run out and the death angel has taken your soul out of your body and they have put you in the grave, the house of loneliness and isolation, and then your soul has returned to the body and the two angels who test the faith of the dead in their tombs have entered the grave for asking you questions.

Beware! The first thing they ask you is about worshipping God, then about the messenger of God sent to you and then about your faith and the book you read. They also ask you about the Imam you were devoted to and obeyed, and about how you spent your life and how you earned your wealth and in what way you spent it.

And beware oh son of Adam. There will be greater, harder and more painful fears for you later on the Resurrection Day, the day in which all people gather and give testimony. On that day, God gathers all humans, from the first one to the last. It is the day in which graves open up and on that day no repentance is accepted from anyone and on that day everyone is rewarded or punished based on his performance (in this world).

So everyone from the faithful who has done an atom’s weight of good shall see it and everyone from the faithful who has done an atom’s weight of evil shall see it. (Surah Zilzal, verses 7-8)
