Hundreds of Security Cameras Installed in Karbala Ahead of Muharram

Police in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, have installed more than a thousand new cameras in different parts of the city as part of measures to ensure the security of the pilgrims.

The Karbala police command said the work to install over 1,000 cameras in the city’s entrances and exit routes and around the holy shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) has been completed, Al-Sumaria TV reported.

It also said a number of individuals wanted for security reasons have been identified and arrested by the Karbala police in recent days.

The stepped up measures to ensure security in Karbala comes as the lunar Hijri month of Muharram approaches.

In this month, Shia Muslims all over the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), who was martyred on the Day of Ashura in the 680 (AD) Battle of Karbala along with 72 of his companions.

A large number of pilgrims from across Iraq and other countries, including Iran, visit Karbala during Muharram and the following month of Safar.
