Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance has organized the contest in cooperation with Thailand’s Central Islamic Council.
A total of 288 men and women from different parts of the Southeast Asian country are taking part in the Quranic event.
It is aimed at encouraging Thai Muslims to learn the Quran by heart, according to News24.com website.
Memorization of the entire Quran along with Tafseer (interpretation), and memorization of 15, 10 and 5 Juzes (parts) are the categories of the competition.
The preliminary round will run for five days and the top contenders in the men and women sections make it to the final stage.
Top winners will receive cash prizes totaling 500,000 Saudi riyals, according to the organizers.
Thailand is a country at the center of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia.
Muslims are the second largest religious group in Thailand making up about five percent of the country’s 70 million population.
