Cleric Highlights Importance Attached by Islam to Protection of Environment

An Islamic seminary scholar said protection of the environment is an important issue that Islam lays emphasis on.

Addressing a forum on “Air Pollution from the Viewpoint of Fiqh and Law”, Hojat-ol-Islam Salman Behjati said the Holy Quran, Hadiths and Fatwas of Faqihs have underlined the need for protecting the environment.

The forum was organized by the Contemporary Fiqh Studies Research Center in Qom on Tuesday.

He quoted a Hadith from Imam Sadiq (AS) who said life would not be sweet without clean air and water and fertile land.

Those who claim interest in protection of the environment began in the 18th century in Europe are mistaken, he said.

Teachings about importance of the environment and safeguarding it have been there in Islamic sources for centuries, he noted.

The cleric stressed the Quran’s references to the environment, including Verse 58 of Surah Al-A’raf: “A good land produces plants, by the permission of its Lord, but a wicked land produces only miserable, bitter plants. Thus do We show a variety of evidence for those who give thanks.”

There are also many examples in Fiqhi (jurisprudential) books in which Shia scholars point to environmental issues, the member of the Strategic Environment Committee of Islamic Seminaries added.
