Significance of Unity among Believers

Differences in views sometimes may cause divisions among believers. But the Holy Quran introduces a special way and invites all to unity.

God says in Verse 103 of Surah Al Imran: “And hold fast to the Bond of Allah, together, and do not scatter. Remember the Favor of Allah bestowed upon you when you were enemies, and how He united your hearts, so that by His Favor you became brothers. And how He saved you from the Pit of Fire when you were on the brink of it. And so Allah makes plain to you His verses (signs), in order that you will be guided.”

What the verse means by “rope of God” is every think that connects us with God, being it Islam, the Quran, or the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

This verse points to the great blessing of unity and fraternity and calls on Muslims to reflect on the sad situation in the past and compare the previous divisions with this unity.

It attributes bringing the hearts of believers closer together to God, saying, “(God) united your hearts, so that by His Favor you became brothers.” This could be cited as one of the miracles of Islam that spread friendship among Arabs while they were engaged in hostilities and wars prior to the advent of Islam.

Important Points from Verse 103 of Surah Al Imran

Creating unity among hearts is only possible with the favor of God. In Verse 63 of Surah Al-Anfal, God says to the Holy Prophet (PBUH): “… among whose hearts He has placed affection and unity. If you were to spend the wealth of the whole earth, you would not have been able to unite their hearts but God has been able to unite them. God is Majestic and All-wise.”

Disunity and discord are among divine punishments. Another point is that in Islam, telling lies with the purpose of creation unity is permissible and telling the truth that may cause disunity is Haram (forbidden).

Messages:

1- Unity and avoiding discord is a divine task for people. “And hold fast to the Bond of Allah, together…”

2- The basis of unity should be the religion of God, not race, language, nationality, etc. “And hold fast to the Bond of Allah, together…”

3- One should not forget the blessings and services of Islam. “Remember the Favor of Allah bestowed upon you when you were enemies, and how He united your hearts, so that by His Favor you became brothers.”

4- Unity is a cause for fraternity. “… by His Favor you became brothers.”

5- Unity is among God’s great favors. “… by His Favor you became brothers.”

6- Disunity and discord are pits of fire. “And how He saved you from the Pit of Fire.”

7- God’s favors are his signs. “Remember the Favor of Allah bestowed upon you … And so Allah makes plain to you His verses (signs).”

8- Remembering God’s favors paves the way for guidance. “Remember the Favor of Allah bestowed upon you… in order that you will be guided.”
