Children and teenagers from five African countries took part in a Quran contest organized by the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine.<\/div>\n

It was attended by some 150 contenders from Mauritania, Mali, Senegal, Niger and Tanzania, according to Al-Kafeel website.<\/p>\n

The African Studies Center affiliated to the Astan\u2019s Ideological and Cultural Affairs Department held the Quranic event.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Saad Sattar al-Shimri, head of the center, said the participants were aged 6 to 15.<\/p>\n

It was aimed at encouraging children and teenagers to memorize short Surahs (chapters) of the Holy Book, he said.<\/p>\n

He added that Quran experts from the Astan\u2019s Holy Quran Institute formed the panel of judges.<\/p>\n

According to al-Shimri, winners were awarded cash prizes and other prizes at the end of the contest.<\/p>\n

Given the good reception of the Quranic event, there are plans to hold such competitions for other age groups as well, he went on to say.<\/p>\n

The African Studies Center of the Astan organizes various Quranic, religious, ideological and cultural programs for African countries.<\/p>\n
