Some references mentioned not testing him by spending Allah\u2019s (SWT) favors in a way that He is not pleased\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cGhaniy\u201d (\u063a\u064e\u0646\u0650\u064a) is one of the names and attributes of Allah (SWT) that means Self-sufficient and Free from need. For instance, the phrase (\u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0647\u064f\u0648\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u064e\u0646\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0645\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064f)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0means that Allah (SWT) is Free from need (self-sufficient), the Praiseworthy. The word \u201cGhaniy\u201d (\u063a\u064e\u0646\u0650\u064a) is also used as an attribute for a human being and means rich since rich people do not need the help of others. For instance, the phrase (\u0625\u0650\u0646 \u064a\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0646\u0652 \u063a\u064e\u0646\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064b\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u0648\u0652 \u0641\u064e\u0642\u0650\u064a\u0631\u064b\u0627)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0means whether one is rich or poor. The word \u201cFaqeer\u201d (\u0641\u064e\u0642\u0650\u064a\u0631) is an antonym of \u201cGhaniy\u201d (\u063a\u064e\u0646\u0650\u064a). It refers to a person who is not self-sufficient and needs other people\u2019s support and assistance.<\/p>\n<p>This essay will address the following questions: What is required for self-sufficiency? You might say power and wealth. Does wealth and power guarantee self-sufficiency? What are the perils of poverty and wealth?<\/p>\n<p><strong>How we can become self-sufficient<\/strong>: Islam encourages everyone to work hard to meet their daily needs. Imam Baqir\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0(AS) narrated that Prophet Musa (AS) asked Allah (SWT): \u201cWhich one of Your servants is the most despicable in Your view? God said: The one who sleeps like a dead man in his bed at night and acts idle during the day.\u201d \u00a0One of the characteristics of believers is to wake up in the middle of the night to think and meditate, perform prayers, recite the Qur\u2019an and seek God\u2019s forgiveness\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Imams of the Ahlul-Bayt (AS) earned their livelihood by working. One of the companions of Imam Musa bin Jafar Al-Kazem (AS) saw him working on his agricultural land on a hot day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>. He was surprised and asked: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you leave the trouble of this work to others?\u201d Imam (AS) responded: \u201cThe Prophet (PBUH), Amir Al-Mu\u2019minin (AS), and all my ancestors earned their livelihood by working, and this is the tradition of all prophets and messengers and their deputies and all the righteous servants of Allah (SWT).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There could be an instance when someone works hard but requires more earnings to support himself and his family. Consequently, he still falls into poverty and is forced to ask others for help. Many narrations point out the dangers of poverty<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>. For instance, Imam Amir Al-Mu\u2019minin Ali (AS) said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cPoverty brings deterioration to faith, perplexity to the intellect, and a motive for hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u0641\u064e\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0641\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0631\u064e \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652\u0642\u064e\u0635\u064e\u0629\u064c \u0644\u0650\u0644\u062f\u0651\u0650\u064a\u0646\u0650 \u0645\u064e\u062f\u0652\u0647\u064e\u0634\u064e\u0629\u064c \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0644\u0650 \u062f\u064e\u0627\u0639\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0629\u064c \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0642\u0652\u062a\u0650 .<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet (PBUH) said: \u201cPoverty is almost disbelief\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>\u0642\u0627\u0644 \u0631\u0633\u0648\u0644\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u0650 \u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0622\u0644\u0647 : \u0643\u0627\u062f\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0641\u064e\u0642\u0631\u064f \u0623\u0646 \u064a\u064e\u0643\u0648\u0646\u064e \u0643\u064f\u0641\u0631\u0627\u064b<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The perils of wealth:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0Similarly, wealth can also lead to disbelief. A good example is Firon, who held enormous wealth and full sovereignty over the Children of Israel. Everything he wanted in his kingdom was available to him. He wanted more, but there was nothing more he could claim except to call himself the great lord\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a>\u00a0(\u0641\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e \u0623\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u064f\u0643\u064f\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670). His absolute power destroyed him.<\/p>\n<p>Allah (SWT) sent many warnings to wake Firon from the intoxication of power, wealth, and selfishness, but nothing woke him up. Eventually, Allah (SWT) drowned him in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>According to verses 10:90-91 (chapter Yunus), he accepted faith in God as he was drowning, but it was too late\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Verse 96:7 (chapter Al-Alaq) says that human beings transgress once they perceive that they are wealthy, self-sufficient, and independent from Allah (SWT) and Divine Creation:<\/p>\n<p>\u0643\u064e\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0627 \u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0633\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e \u0644\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0637\u0652\u063a\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u200e\ufd3f\u0666\ufd3e\u200f \u0623\u064e\u0646 \u0631\u0651\u064e\u0622\u0647\u064f \u0627\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u063a\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u200e\ufd3f\u0667\ufd3e\u200f<\/p>\n<p>96:6-7\u00a0<em>No<\/em>! (But)\u00a0<em>indeed<\/em>,\u00a0<em>man transgresses Because he sees himself self-sufficient<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Imam Ali (AS) says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cSeek refuge in God from the intoxication of wealth because you gain your awareness very late from the intoxication of wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u0644\u0625\u0645\u0627\u0645 \u0639\u0644\u064a (\u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645): \u0627\u0633\u0652\u062a\u064e\u0639\u0650\u064a\u0630\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u0650 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u0633\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649\u200f \u0641\u064e\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0633\u064e\u0643\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064b \u0628\u064e\u0639\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064e\u0629\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0625\u0650\u0641\u064e\u0627\u0642\u064e\u0629\u0650<\/p>\n<p>Examples of people who were intoxicated with their wealth include\u00a0<em>Abu Jahl<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Abu Lahab.<\/em>\u00a0They thought that their wealth would make them immortal. Hence, they mocked and taunted the Prophet (PBUH) and the believers. Verse 104:1-3 (chapter Al-Humaza) says:<\/p>\n<p>\u0648\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0644\u064c \u0644\u0651\u0650\u0643\u064f\u0644\u0651\u0650 \u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0632\u064e\u0629\u064d \u0644\u0651\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0632\u064e\u0629\u064d \u200e\ufd3f\u0661\ufd3e\u200f \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a \u062c\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0639\u064e \u0645\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064b\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u0639\u064e\u062f\u0651\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0647\u064f \u200e\ufd3f\u0662\ufd3e\u200f \u064a\u064e\u062d\u0652\u0633\u064e\u0628\u064f \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0645\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0623\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0644\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0647\u064f \u200e\ufd3f\u0663\ufd3e<\/p>\n<p>104:1-2\u00a0<em>Woe to every slanderer, backbiter. The one who collects wealth and counts it.\u00a0 Thinking that his wealth will make him immortal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In chapter Al-Masad, the Qur\u2019an curses Abu Lahab, a wealthy man from the tribe of Quraish. His wealth will not avail him or that which he earned. He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flame and his wife [as well] \u2013 the carrier of firewood. Around her neck is a rope of palm-fiber<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, many righteous and wealthy people, men, and women, can use their wealth to advance noble causes. A great example is the noble lady of Islam, Ummul-Mu\u2019minin, Hazrat Khadijah (SA).<\/p>\n<p>She was a very reputable businesswoman who gave her wealth away to advance Islam. She lived with the Prophet (PBUH) during challenging circumstances in Mecca. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) addresses the Prophet (PBUH) and says:<\/p>\n<p>\u0648\u064e\u0648\u064e\u062c\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0643\u064e \u0639\u064e\u0627\u0626\u0650\u0644\u064b\u0627 \u0641\u064e\u0623\u064e\u063a\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u200e\ufd3f\u0668\ufd3e<\/p>\n<p>93:8\u00a0<em>And God found you poor<\/em>\u00a0(O\u2019 Prophet)\u00a0<em>and made<\/em>\u00a0(you)\u00a0<em>self-sufficient<\/em>\u00a0(through the wealth of the noble Lady Khadijah (SA)).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Inward Self-Sufficience:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0Some people are outwardly poor but inwardly rich, like Abu Dharr, one of the great companions of the Prophet (PBUH) and Imam Ali (AS).<\/p>\n<p>Abi Basir (\u0627\u0628\u0649\u200c\u0628\u0635\u064a\u0631) narrated from Imam Sadiq (AS) that Uthman (\u0639\u062b\u0645\u0627\u0646) gave 200 dinars of gold coins to two trusted people to give to Abu Dhar to spend on his needs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two people reached Abu Dhar, conveyed Uthman\u2019s greeting, and gave him the 200 dinars. Abu Dhar asked if Uthman had offered such an amount to any other Muslims? They responded no. Abu Dhar said, \u201cI am a Muslim like other Muslims, and there is no reason for me to receive a gift from Usman while others are deprived.\u201d The two individuals told Abu Dharr that Uthman sent this gift from his wealth and swore that he earned it with halal means. Abu Dharr said, \u201cI am wealthy and don\u2019t need this money.\u201d They looked at his room and said, \u201cMay God bless you. We see little in your room that you can benefit from.\u201d He said, \u201cI have two loaves of bread, which will fulfill today\u2019s needs. Hence, I don\u2019t need this money. Return it to Uthman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allah (SWT) blessed self-sufficiency to the soul (\u063a\u0646\u0627\u06cc \u0646\u0641\u0633) of Abu Dhar. As a result, he was content and pleased with what he had. Abu Dharr might have outwardly looked poor, but inwardly he was rich. Alternatively, some people are outwardly well off but inwardly poor; hence, they struggle to amass wealth and property in their life.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet (PBUH) said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]:<\/a>\u00a0\u201c<em>Self-sufficiency is not in having many possessions<\/em><em>,\u00a0<\/em>but rather (true) wealth is feeling sufficiency in the soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0633\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u0639\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u0643\u064e\u062b\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0636\u0650\u060c \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0643\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650<\/p>\n<p>Imam Ali (AS) asked his son, Imam Mojtaba (AS), some questions. What is the meaning of self-sufficiency?\u201d Imam Hassan (AS) replied: \u201cSatisfaction of the soul with what Allah has provided for him, even if it is tiny. When a human soul reaches that lofty position, the human is free from need and is self-sufficient.\u201d Imam Ali (AS) asked him: \u201cWhat is poverty?\u201d Imam Hassan (AS) replied: \u201cPrevalence of greed in everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the prayers of Imam Hussain (AS) on the day of Arafa, while his eyes were full of tears and heart full of love and hope, was:<\/p>\n<p>\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0627\u062c\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0644\u0652\u200f \u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0627\u064a\u064e\u200f \u0641\u0650\u064a\u200f \u0646\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650\u064a<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019 Allah (SWT), grant me self-sufficiency in the soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>How to acquire a self-sufficient soul:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u1e62\u0101li\u1e25 M\u0101zandar\u0101n\u012b (\u0645\u0644\u0627 \u0635\u0627\u0644\u062d \u0645\u0627\u0632\u0646\u062f\u0631\u0627\u0646\u06cc) was among the scholars of the 17th century and the son-in-law of Muhammad Taqi Al-Majlisi. He wrote\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Self-sufficiency in the soul could be achieved by being content with destined sustenance, avoiding luxury, and evading the coveting of other people\u2019s wealth and property.<\/p>\n<p>One should concentrate on affairs which lead to salvation in the Hereafter. This practice will make the soul self-sufficient in this world and safe and calm in the Hereafter. Allah (SWT) regarding a self-sufficient soul says:<\/p>\n<p>\u064a\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e\u062a\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0637\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0629\u064f \u200e\ufd3f\u0662\u0667\ufd3e\u200f \u0627\u0631\u0652\u062c\u0650\u0639\u0650\u064a \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u0650\u0643\u0650 \u0631\u064e\u0627\u0636\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0629\u064b \u0645\u0651\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064e\u0629\u064b \u200e\ufd3f\u0662\u0668\ufd3e\u200f \u0641\u064e\u0627\u062f\u0652\u062e\u064f\u0644\u0650\u064a \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0639\u0650\u0628\u064e\u0627\u062f\u0650\u064a \u200e\ufd3f\u0662\u0669\ufd3e\u200f \u0648\u064e\u0627\u062f\u0652\u062e\u064f\u0644\u0650\u064a \u062c\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u062a\u0650\u064a \u200e\ufd3f\u0663\u0660\ufd3e\u200f<\/p>\n<p>89:27-29 (To the righteous it will be said), \u201c<em>O\u2019 reassured soul<\/em>,\u00a0<em>return to your Lord<\/em>,\u00a0<em>well-pleased and pleasing\u00a0<\/em>(to God),\u00a0<em>And enter among<\/em>\u00a0<em>My<\/em>\u00a0(righteous) servants.\u00a0<em>And enter My Paradise<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, Imam Sajjad (AS) invoked Allah (SWT) to provide him with enough means so he could carry out his responsibility without needing anyone\u2019s help. A similar prayer is also mentioned in the supplication of the 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0day of the Month of Ramadhan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\">[18]<\/a>, which reads: \u201cDo not make me needy of any of Your creatures (\u0648\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u062d\u0652\u0648\u062c\u0646\u0650\u064a \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0623\u064e\u062d\u064e\u062f\u064d \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u062e\u064e\u0644\u0652\u0642\u0650\u0643\u0652).\u201d Alternatively, he asked for self-sufficiency in the soul. The Imam (AS) then asked Allah (SWT) to expand His sustenance towards him:<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 \u0648\u064e \u0623\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0639\u0652 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0631\u0650\u0632\u0652\u0642\u0650\u0643\u064e \u060c \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Definition of sustenance:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cRizqi\u201d (\u0631\u0650\u0632\u0652\u0642\u0650) means sustenance. Sustenance could include financial, properties, opportunities, pilgrimage, etc. For instance, in the supplication of the month of Ramadhan, we invoke Allah (SWT) to grant us the privilege of performing the pilgrimage of Hajj this year and every year (\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0631\u0652\u0632\u064f\u0642\u0652\u0646\u0650\u06cc \u062d\u064e\u062c\u0651\u064e \u0628\u064e\u06cc\u0652\u062a\u0650\u06a9\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650 \u0641\u0650\u06cc \u0639\u064e\u0627\u0645\u0650\u06cc \u0647\u064e\u0630\u064e\u0627 \u0648\u064e \u0641\u0650\u06cc \u06a9\u064f\u0644\u0651\u0650 \u0639\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064d).<\/p>\n<p>The following phrase refers to one of the attributes of a self-sufficient soul, which never thinks about or covets people\u2019s wealth and properties. The Imam (AS) invoked Allah (SWT) not to try him\u00a0<em>by thinking and longing for other people\u2019s wealth:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 \u0648\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u0641\u0652\u062a\u0650\u0646\u0651\u0650\u064a \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0638\u064e\u0631\u0650\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026And do not put me in trial with thinking and longing for other people\u2019s wealth.<\/p>\n<p>We should always think positively and be content with what we have instead of grieving for the things we miss. The Prophet (PBUH) said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/287593\/achieving-self-sufficiency-commentary-on-dua-makarim-akhlaq-part-7\/#_ftn19\"
