An examination must be made to see which way is correct:<br \/>\n1. \u201cKitab Allah wa \u2018itrati ahli bayti\u201d {\u201cThe Book of Allah and my progeny, the members of my Household\u201d}, or<br \/>\n2. \u201cKitab Allah wa sunnati\u201d {\u201cThe Book of Allah and my tradition\u201d}.<br \/>\nReply: The authentic {sahih} and established {thabit} hadith of the Holy Prophet (S)[1][5] is the one with the phrase, \u201cwa ahl bayti\u201d {and the members of my Household}. The chain of transmission {sanad} of the narration which contains the phrase, \u201csunnati\u201d {my tradition} instead of \u201cahla bayti\u201d {the members of my Household} is invalid, therefore it is rejected {mardud} and the chain of transmission of the hadith, \u201cwa ahla bayti\u201d is absolutely sound.<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The chain of transmission of the narration, \u201cwa ahli bayti\u201d {and my Household}<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThis text has been narrated by two prominent muhaddiths {hadith scholars}:<br \/>\n1. In his Sahih, Muslim narrates from Zayd ibn al-Arqam, thus: One day Allah\u2019s Messenger (S) stood up to deliver sermon near a pool known as Khumm situated between Mecca and Medina. I am about to receive a messenger (the angel of death) from my Lord and I, in response to Allah\u2019s call, (would bid goodbye to you), but I am leaving among you two weighty things: the one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it.<br \/>\nHe exhorted (us) (to hold fast) to the Book of Allah and then said: The second are the members of my Household; I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family. I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family. I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family.[2][6]<br \/>\nDarmi has also mentioned this text in his Sunan.[3][7] It must be said that the chain of transmission of each of the two is as bright as the sun and there is no room for doubt about it.<br \/>\n2. One is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, which is the cord extending from the heaven to the earth and my progeny, the members of my Household. These two will never separate from each other until they meet me at the Pond {hawd} (of Kawthar). Be careful as to how you will behave toward them after me.[4][8]<br \/>\nBoth Muslim and Tirmidhi, who are among the compilers of Sahihs and Sunans (compilations of hadiths regarded as authentic by the Ahl as-Sunnah), highlight the phrase, \u201cAhl al-Bayt\u201d, and this evidence supports our view, and the chains of transmission of both hadiths enjoy such accuracy and special reliability that they need no discussion and argumentation.<br \/>\nThe chain of transmission of the narration, \u201cwa sunnati\u201d {and my tradition}<br \/>\nThe tradition, which mentions the phrase, \u201csunnati\u201d {my tradition} instead of \u201cahli bayti\u201d {members of my Household}, is a fabricated hadith, which apart from the weakness of its chain of transmission, was concocted and transmitted by the \u2018Umayyad agents:<br \/>\n1. In his Mustadrak (\u2018ala\u2019s-Sahihayn), Hakim al-Nayshaburi relates this narration with the following chain of transmission:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>\u0627\u0644\u062f\u0651\u064a\u0644\u0645\u064a \u0632\u064a\u062f \u0628\u0646 \u062b\u0648\u0631 \u0639\u0646 \u0627\u0648\u064a\u0633 \u0627\u0628\u064a \u0639\u0646 \u0623\u0648\u064a\u0633 \u0623\u0628\u064a \u0628\u0646 \u0639\u0646 \u0639\u0628\u0651\u0627\u0633<br \/>\n:\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0631\u0633\u0648\u0644 \u0642\u0627\u0644: \u0642\u0627\u0644 \u0639\u0628\u0651\u0627\u0633 \u0627\u0628\u0646 \u0639\u0646 \u0639\u0643\u0631\u0645\u0629 \u0639\u0646<br \/>\n\u062a\u0636\u0644\u0651\u0648\u0627 \u0641\u0644\u0646 \u0628\u0647 \u0627\u0639\u062a\u0635\u0645\u062a\u0645 \u0623\u0646 \u0648 \u0641\u064a\u0643\u0645 \u062a\u0631\u0643\u062a \u0642\u062f \u0625\u0646\u0651\u0650\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u0627\u0633 \u0627\u064a\u0651\u0647\u0627 \u064a\u0627\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c!\u0646\u0628\u064a\u0651\u0647 \u0633\u0646\u0651\u0629 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0643\u062a\u0627\u0628 \u0623\u0628\u062f\u064b\u0627<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n\u2018Abbas ibn Abi Uways narrates on the authority of Abi Uways from Thawr ibn Zayd ad-Daylami from \u2018Ukrumah from Ibn \u2018Abbas: The Messenger of Allah (S) said: \u201cO people, I am leaving among you two things to which if you hold fast, you shall never go astray: the Book of Allah and the tradition of His prophet!\u201d[5][9]<br \/>\nAmong the transmitters of this narration are Isma\u2018il ibn Abi Uways and Abu Uways\u2014a father and a son who were not found trustworthy, and they were also accused of lying, fabrication and forgery.<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>What the \u2018ulama\u2019 of rijal say about the two versions<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIn Tahdhib al-Kamal, Hafiz al-Mizzi,[6][10] one of the researchers of the science of rijal,[7][11] writes about Isma\u2018il and his father as follows:<br \/>\nYahya ibn Mu\u2018in (who is one of the prominent \u2018ulama\u2019 of \u2018ilm ar-rijal) says: \u201cAbu Uways and his son (Isma\u2018il) are \u2018weak\u2019 {da\u2018if}. It is also reported that Yahya ibn Mu\u2018in used to say: \u201cThese two persons used to steal hadith.\u201d Ibn Mu\u2018in also says about the son (Isma\u2018il): \u201cHe cannot be trusted.\u201d<br \/>\nRegarding the son (Isma\u2018il), Nisa\u2019i says: \u201cHe is \u2018weak\u2019 and not trustworthy.\u201d<br \/>\nAbu\u2019l-Qasim Lalka\u2019i says: \u201cNisa\u2019i has said a lot against him, concluding that his narration must be rejected.\u201d<br \/>\nIbn \u2018Adi, one of the \u2018ulama\u2019 of rijal, says: \u201cIbn Abi Uways, a maternal uncle of Malik, narrates strange hadiths, which nobody accepts.\u201d[8][12]<br \/>\nIn the Introduction to Fath al-Barri, Ibn Hajar (al-\u2018Asqalani) has stated: \u201cOne can never refer (as proof) to the hadith of Ibn Abi Uways on account of the reproach which Nisa\u2019i has heaped on him.\u201d[9][13]<br \/>\nIn the book, Fath al-Mulk al-\u2018Ala, Hafiz Sayyid Ahmad ibn Sadiq narrates on the authority of Salmah ibn Shayb, thus: \u201cIsma\u2018il ibn Abi Uways was heard to have said: \u2018Whenever the people of Medina split into two over an issue, I fabricated a hadith\u2019.\u201d[10][14]<br \/>\nTherefore, the son (Isma\u2018il ibn Abi Uways) is charged with fabricating hadith and Ibn Mu\u2018in says that he lies. In addition, his narration has come neither in the Sahih of Muslim nor in the Sunan of Tirmidhi or any other Sahih books.<br \/>\nConcerning Abu Uways, it is enough to state that Abu Hatam ar-Razi in the book, Al-Jarah wa\u2019t-Ta\u2018dil, says: \u201cHis narration may be recorded but it must not be referred to (as proof), and his narration is neither strong {qawi} nor firm {muhkam}.\u201d[11][15]<br \/>\nAbu Hatam who relates on the authority of Ibn Mu\u2018in says that Abu Uways is unreliable.<br \/>\nAny narration {riwayah} related by any of these two is by no means authentic {sahih}. Moreover, it does not accord with authentic and sound narrations.<br \/>\nIt is worth considering that the narrator of the hadith, viz. Hakim al-Nayshaburi has acknowledged the weakness of the hadith and instead of putting right its chain of transmission, he has brought forth a witness who speaks in favor of it and whose chain of transmission is also weak and devoid of any credibility and so, instead of strengthening the hadith, he has made its weakness more distinct. Now, let us see the following weak witness:<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The second chain of transmission of the narration, \u201cwa sunnati\u201d {and my tradition}<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWith a chain of transmission that will come later on, Hakim al-Nayshaburi thus relates on the authority of Abu Hurayrah in a narration termed marfu\u2018:[12][16]<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><br \/>\n:\u0628\u0639\u062f\u0647\u0645\u0627 \u062a\u0636\u0644\u0651\u0648\u0627 \u0644\u0646 \u0634\u064a\u0626\u064a\u0646 \u0641\u064a\u0643\u0645 \u062a\u0631\u0643\u062a \u0642\u062f \u0625\u0646\u0651\u064a\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c.\u0627\u0644\u062d\u0648\u0636 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0651\u064e \u064a\u0631\u062f\u0627 \u062d\u062a\u0649\u0670 \u064a\u0641\u062a\u0631\u0642\u0627 \u0644\u0646 \u0648 \u0633\u0646\u0651\u062a\u064a \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0643\u062a\u0627\u0628<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nVerily, I am leaving among you two things to which (if you hold fast) you shall never go astray: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah {tradition} and they will never separate (from each other) until they meet me at the Pond {hawd} (of Kawthar).[13][17]<br \/>\nHakim has transmitted this narration with the following chain of transmission: \u201cAd-Dabi relating on the authority of Salih ibn Musa at-Talhi from \u2018Abd al-\u2018Aziz ibn Rafi\u2018 from Abi Salih from Abu Hurayrah.\u201d<br \/>\nLike the previous narration, this narration is a fabricated one, and Salih ibn Musa at-Talhi is one of its transmitters about whom great figures of \u2018ilm ar-rijal say:<br \/>\nYahya ibn Mu\u2018in says: \u201cSalih ibn Musa is unreliable.\u201d Abu Hatam ar-Razi says: \u201cHis hadith is \u2018weak\u2019 {da\u2018if} and \u2018unusual\u2019 {munkar}; he narrates many of his \u2018unusual\u2019 hadiths from trustworthy individuals.\u201d Nisa\u2019i says: \u201cHis hadith cannot be recorded.\u201d In another place, he says: \u201cHis hadith is rejected {matruk}.\u201d[14][18]<br \/>\nIn Tahdhib at-Tahdhib, Ibn Hajar (al-\u2018Asqalani) writes: \u201cIbn Hibban says: \u2018Salih ibn Musa attributes to trustworthy individuals, things which do not correspond with their words.\u2019 He then says: \u2018His hadith does not represent a sound proof\u2019 and Abu Na\u2018im says: \u2018His hadith is rejected and he always narrates unusual hadiths\u2019.\u201d[15][19]<br \/>\nAlso, in At-Taqrib,[16][20] Ibn Hajar says: \u201cHis hadith is rejected.\u201d In Al-Kashif,[17][21] Dhahabi says: \u201cHis hadith is weak.\u201d In Mizan al-I\u2018tidal,[18][22] Dhahabi relates a disputable hadith from him, and says that it is among his \u2018usual\u2019 hadiths.<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The third chain of transmission of the narration, \u201cwa sunnati\u201d {and my tradition}<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIn At-Tamhid, Ibn \u2018Abd al-Barr relates this narration with the following chain of transmission: \u2018Abd ar-Rahman ibn Yahya relating on the authority of Ahmad ibn Sa\u2018id from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ad-Dubayli from \u2018Ali ibn Zayd al-Fara\u2019idi from al-Hunayni from Kathir ibn \u2018Abd Allah ibn \u2018Amru ibn \u2018Awf from his father from his grandfather.[19][23]<br \/>\nConcerning Kathir ibn \u2018Abd Allah, Imam ash-Shafi\u2018i says: \u201cHe is one of the pillars of lying.\u201d[20][24] Abu Dawud says: \u201cHe is one of the mendacious and liars.\u201d[21][25] Ibn Hibban says: \u201c\u2018Abd Allah ibn Kathir narrates from his father and grandfather a book of hadith based on forgery. Relating any narration from that book and any of \u2018Abd Allah\u2019s narration is unlawful except if it is intended to express surprise or for the sake of criticism.\u201d[22][26]<br \/>\nNisa\u2019i and Darqutni say: \u201cHis hadith is rejected.\u201d Imam Ahmad (ibn Hanbal) says: \u201cHe is munkar al-hadith (he who relates odd hadiths) and he is not reliable\u201d. And Ibn Mu\u2018in has the same view about him.<br \/>\nIt is surprising that in the biographical account of Kathir, At-Taqrib, Ibn Hajar has contented himself with the term, \u201cweak\u201d {da\u2018if}, regarding those who have accused him of lying as fanatic. Meanwhile the forerunners of \u2018ilm al-rijal have charged him with lying and forgery. Moreover, Dhahabi says: \u201cHis statement is unfounded and weak.\u201d<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Narration without a chain of transmission<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIn Al-Muwatta\u2019 Malik has narrated it as mursal[23][27] without mentioning the chain of transmission,[24][28] and we all know that such a narration is devoid of any value.<br \/>\nThis survey has clearly shown that the narration, \u201cwa sunnati\u201d {and my tradition} has been forged and concocted by the mendacious narrators affiliated to the \u2018Umayyads who have fabricated it as opposed to the authentic hadith, \u201cwa \u2018itrati\u201d {and my progeny}.<br \/>\nAs such, it is necessary for those who deliver sermons in mosques, religious orators, and prayer leaders to abandon the unfounded narration attributed to the Messenger of Allah (S), and to familiarize, instead, the people with the authentic hadith\u2014the hadith which has been narrated by Muslim in his Sahih with the phrase \u201cahla bayti\u201d {members of my Household} and Tirmidhi (in his Sunan) with the words \u201c\u2018itrati ahla bayti\u201d {my progeny, the members of my Household}. He wrapped him in it and then said: \u201cO God! They are the members of my Household {ahl al-bayt}. Repel all impurity from them and purify them with a thorough purification.\u201d Umm Salmah said: \u201cO Prophet of Allah! Am I with them?\u201d He said: \u201cRemain where you are and you are in good (position).\u201d[29][33]<\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>The meaning of Hadith ath-Thaqalayn {Tradition on the Two Weighty Things}<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAs the Holy Prophet has mentioned \u2018itrah {progeny} alongside the Qur\u2019an, describing both of them as the proofs of Allah for the ummah, two conclusions can be deduced from it:<br \/>\n1. The words of the Prophet\u2019s progeny {\u2018itrah}, like the very Qur\u2019an, is a proof {hujjah}, and so in religious affairs\u2014both ideological and jurisprudential\u2014their words must have to be adhered and with the existence of the proof that they have to be followed, one must not turn away from them and follow others.<br \/>\nAlthough after the demise of the Prophet (S) the Muslims split over the issue of caliphate and administering the political affairs of the ummah and they became two groups each of which has its own logic and basis, they ought to have no disagreement about the intellectual authority of the Ahl al-Bayt (\u2018a) because all Muslims confirm the authenticity of Hadith ath-Thaqalayn, which regards the Qur\u2019an and the Prophet\u2019s Ahl al-Bayt (\u2018a) as the authority on beliefs and laws, and if the Muslim ummah abide by this hadith, the scope of difference will be narrowed and this will pave the way to the unity of the Muslims.<br \/>\n2. The Qur\u2019an, the Word of Allah, is preserved from error and mistake. So how could it include errors when God says about it:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>\u0644\u0627\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0623\u0652\u062a\u0650\u064a\u0647\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0628\u064e\u0627\u0637\u0650\u0644\u064f \u0645\u0650\u0646 \u0628\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646\u0650 \u064a\u064e\u062f\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0647\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u062e\u064e\u0644\u0652\u0641\u0650\u0647\u0650 \u062a\u064e\u0646\u0632\u0650\u064a\u0644\u064c \u0645\u0651\u0650\u0646\u0652 \u062d\u064e\u0643\u0650\u064a\u0645\u064d \u062d\u064e\u0645\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064d<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>\u201cFalsehood cannot approach it, from before it nor from behind it, a {gradually} sent down {revelation} from One all-wise, all-laudable\u201d[30][34]?<br \/>\nIf the Qur\u2019an is preserved from error, then its partner and counterpart, i.e. the \u2018itrah must also be preserved from error because it is incorrect to couple an errant person or errant people with the Qur\u2019an.<br \/>\nThis hadith is a testimony to their immunity from any sort of impurity. It must be observed here that infallibility {\u2018ismah} is not a special privilege which only prophets (\u2018a) enjoy. It is not impossible for an individual to be immune from sin eventhough he or she is not a prophet.
