It was attended by some 150 contenders from Mauritania, Mali, Senegal, Niger and Tanzania, according to Al-Kafeel website.
The African Studies Center affiliated to the Astan’s Ideological and Cultural Affairs Department held the Quranic event.
Sheikh Saad Sattar al-Shimri, head of the center, said the participants were aged 6 to 15.
It was aimed at encouraging children and teenagers to memorize short Surahs (chapters) of the Holy Book, he said.
He added that Quran experts from the Astan’s Holy Quran Institute formed the panel of judges.
According to al-Shimri, winners were awarded cash prizes and other prizes at the end of the contest.
Given the good reception of the Quranic event, there are plans to hold such competitions for other age groups as well, he went on to say.
The African Studies Center of the Astan organizes various Quranic, religious, ideological and cultural programs for African countries.
