Great efforts have been made for the delivery of the Quran and religion to us as many people have been tortured or martyred for protecting the sacred book. Therefore, every Muslim has a host of duties toward the Quran.

Naser Rafiei, an Iranian researcher in the field of religion, has discussed the importance of the Quran and paid attention to its verses.

He starts the discussion with this verse: “No, rather they are clear verses in the chests of those who have been given knowledge. None disbelieves Our verses except the harmdoers.” [29:49] Below is a summary of his remarks.

This verse highlights that the Quran is “clear” for the people of knowledge and that disbelievers do not benefit from the book, rather, they reject the verse.

Accordingly, seven duties of Muslims towards the Quran can be named:

1) Learning the Quran and trying to read it correctly

2) Reciting the Quran; it is said that one can evade sins by reciting 50 verses of the Quran every year.

3) Listening to the Quran; “Whenever the Quran is recited (to you), listen to it quietly so that you may receive mercy.” [7:204] So it is the duty of Muslims to listen to the Quran whenever they are recited.

4) Respecting the Quran; we should not put the Quran in an inappropriate place or face it when we have not in good condition.

5) Thinking; Allameh Tabatabai said he read 10 Juzes (parts) of the Quran every day but just think deeply about one verse.

6) Implementing its guidelines; according to narrations, the Quran blames those who read the Quran but do not implement its instructions or even act against them.

7) Memorizing the Quran; we should memorize the Quran as much as we can.

Sayyid Mohammad Hossein Tabatabai (1904-1981), better known as Allameh Tabatabai, was an Iranian philosopher and Islamic scholar who wrote several works including Tafsir al-Mizan and The Principles of Philosophy and the Method of Realism.
