There are recommendations in the Quran to heal spiritual and faith-related illnesses but there are indirect recommendations, in Halal-Haram format, for physical and social diseases as well.

Several verses in the Quran point to the healing capacity of the book. For instance, verse 82 of Surah Al-Isra which reads “We sent down of the Koran that which is a healing and a mercy to believers, but to the harmdoers it does not increase them, except in loss,” or verse 57 of Surah Yunus: “People, an admonition has now come to you from your Lord, and a healing for what is in the chests, a guide and a mercy to believers.”

The word “Shifa” means health and is the opposite of disease and defect. By examining the different dimensions of man, we find that every person has two physical and mental aspects and each of them may be exposed to various diseases which can, in part, disrupt the efficiency of our other aspects.

The Quran was revealed at the first stage to cure people’s faith-related diseases such as Shirk (polytheism) and guide them toward Islam and Tawheed (monotheism). The Quran notes that the goal of the revelation is to guide mankind from ignorance to knowledge, from disbelief to faith, from oppression to justice, from corruption to goodness, and from sin to piety. These defects can lead to diseases that are more severe than physical ones.

The Qur’an is not a book of health and medicine, but a book for spiritual education, and if it refers to medical, health, and scientific matters, it is because it paves the way to know God and stimulates human curiosity to grow in the field of experimental sciences. and seek to discover it, and more importantly, due to the connection of physical and spiritual needs and their influence on each other, the Qur’an considers it necessary to pay special attention to physical health.

For example, when talking about foods, the Quran recommends people to eat clean foods, and avoid eating pork and drinking wine.

Instructions in the Quran on Wudu (ablution), Ghusl, and cleanness of clothes and environment clearly point to the importance of personal hygiene.

The Holy Quran also has a number of other instructions about health such as using honey in the treatment of physical diseases, fasting and its effect on health, and the effect of listening to the recitation of the Quran on reducing physical pain.
