According to traditional Islamic Fiqh, some conditions need to be met when it comes to implementing Quran’s directive on forbidding others from the wrong.

Enjoining good and forbidding wrong is among the key teachings of Islam. “My son, be steadfast in prayer. Make others do good. Prevent them from doing evil. Be patient in hardship. Patience comes from faith and determination.” (Surah Luqman, verse 17)

Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Soroush Mahallati, a seminary scholar in Qom, pointed to some of the conditions needed for this directive. Here is a summary of his remarks:

Imam Hussein (AS) rose to fight the wrong. While marking the great uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) these days, it is a good opportunity to take a deeper look inside and detect our weaknesses.

A society that is infected with wrong deeds is like a city affected by an earthquake or flood. Using Quran’s directive is the path to fighting the wrong in society. But this endeavor has some conditions.

Conditions of enjoining the good

Late Marja Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani offered a fatwa on this issue which will be mentioned below. The scholar was sensitive about good and wrong in society.

He was asked about the limitations and levels of enjoining good and forbidding wrong.

Naming it one of the important deeds, he noted that enjoining good and forbidding wrong has vast aspects and that some delicate points should be observed while carrying it out.

It should be performed in a manner that it becomes effective and be accepted, the fatwa highlights, adding that the deed should not lead others to hate religion, introduce Islam as a violent religion, and pose the one who is performing the deed to the anger of people.

In this fatwa, this Marja notes that some delicate points should be observed so that enjoining good and forbidding wrong to become effective and acceptable.
