Among the prophets sent by God to guide people some were father and son. They include Zakariya (AS) and Yahya (AS), Ibrahim (AS) and Ishaq (AS), Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS), and Yaqub (AS) and Yusuf (AS).

The miracles of two prophets who were father and son, namely Davoud (AS) and Suleiman (AS), have been mentioned in Surah Saba of the Holy Quran.

Surah Saba is the 34th chapter of the Holy Book. It is Makki, has 54 verses and is in the 22nd Juz (part) of the Quran. It is the 58th chapter revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The name Saba comes from verse 54 of the Surah. Saba (Sheba) was the name of a city in Yemen which was home to a people of the same name living in the era when Suleiman (Solomon) was the prophet. Their ruler was a woman named Bilqis.

Part of Surah Saba relates the story of Suleiman (AS) and the people of Saba.

Like other Makki chapters, Surah Saba discusses principles of faith like monotheism, prophethood and the Resurrection Day. It also mentions the punishments for the deniers or those who spread doubts about these principles.

This Surah pays special attention to the issue of Resurrection Day. Other issues discussed in Surah Saba include: God’s signs in the universe and His attributes, debates between the oppressed and the arrogant on the Day of Judgment, some miracles of prophets of God, the fate of those who are thankful and those who aren’t, and inviting human beings to reflect on divine blessings.

Some of the miracles mentioned in this Surah are those related to a father and son: Prophet Davoud (AS) and Prophet Suleiman (AS). Davoud (AS) melted iron, made weapons. Also once Davoud (AS) recited his scripture and glorified Allah while the mountains joined him in praise and birds rallied around him.

Suleiman (AS) had winds and jinn under his command. The Surah also elaborates on how he melted copper, made dishes and constructed buildings. It further relates the story of the people of Saba and their punishment and also talks about Suleiman’s death.
